Anthony Slide has served as both associate archivist of the American Film Institute (acquiring and preserving films for the National Film Collection at the Library of Congress) and as resident film historian of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He published his first book, EARLY AMERICAN CINEMA, in 1970, and among his more than seventy additional works are A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO MOVIE MEMORABILIA and A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO TV MEMORABILIA, both of which are considered definitive works in their respective fields. Among his most recent academic books are SILENT PLAYERS: A BIOGRAPHICAL AND AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL STUDY OF 100 SILENT FILM ACTORS AND ACTRESSES (2002) and AMERICAN RACIST: THE LIFE AND FILMS OF THOMAS DIXON (2004), both published by the University Press of Kentucky, and INSIDE THE HOLLYWOOD FAN MAGAZINES: A HISTORY OF STAR MAKERS, FABRICATORS, AND GOSSIP MONGERS (2010), published by the University Press of Mississippi. He is also editor of the �Filmmakers� series published by Scarecrow Press, and numbering more than 115 volumes. His 1986 book, THE AMERICAN FILM INDUSTRY: A HISTORICAL DICTIONARY, was named outstanding reference source of the year by the American Library Association, and the sequel volume, THE INTERNATIONAL FILM INDUSTRY: A HISTORICAL DICTIONARY, was named outstanding academic book of the year by �Choice� magazine. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF VAUDEVILLE (published in 1994) was named outstanding academic book of the year by �Choice� magazine, best reference book of the year by �Library Journal� and outstanding reference source of the year by the American Library Association.

In 1990, in recognition of his work on the history of popular entertainment, Bowling Green University awarded Anthony Slide a honorary doctorate of letters. At that time he was hailed by Lillian Gish as �our preeminent historian of the silent film.�

Anthony Slide is fully cognizant of the commercial film and television industries, being the former co-owner of Producers Library Service, one of the two oldest and largest independent stock footage libraries in the United States; having served as a consultant on many television programs; and having produced and directed several documentary films, including the feature-length THE SILENT FEMINISTS: AMERICA�S FIRST WOMEN DIRECTORS.





Credentials as an Appraiser

Anthony Slide has been active as a specialist appraiser of entertainment-related items for more than twenty years, and has gained a national reputation in the field. He has appraised papers, correspondence, books, photographs, posters, music, lobby cards, video tapes, audio recordings, motion picture film elements, equipment, and awards, relating to all aspects of popular entertainment, for estate, insurance and tax purposes. The largest collection he has appraised is the archives of producer David L. Wolper, and his best-known appraisal is of the Abraham Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination. He has appraised the papers of individuals as varied as silent screen star Marion Davies and blacklisted screenwriter Ring Lardner, Jr., and collections as small as one scrapbook and as large as 1,500 boxes. In his capacity as an appraiser for the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency, he has been recognized in Los Angeles Superior Court as an expert witness.

ARTIFACTS: Among the unique objects that Anthony Slide has been asked to value are Artie Shaw�s clarinet, donated to the Smithsonian Institution, and the articulated werewolf�s head from the John Landis production of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. From BATMAN (1989), Anthony Slide appraised for Michael Keaton the costume he wore as the title character.

AWARDS: Anthony Slide has valued many awards, including Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes; he has appraised the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Awards presented to David O. Selznick and Darryl F. Zanuck, and the Academy Awards of Margaret Booth, Louis deRochemont, Katharine Hepburn, Harold Lloyd, Mercedes McCambridge, David O. Selznick, Shelley Winters, David L. Wolper, and William Wyler, among others. For insurance purposes, he valued the largest group of Oscars ever gathered together on one occasion at the request of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

COPYRIGHTS: Anthony Slide has appraised the value of copyrights of many individual feature films and television productions, including the independent and experimental productions of Lenny Lipton, Jr., the Ken Murray Hollywood Home Movie Library, the newsreel library of the Mexican company, Noticiero Continental, and the independent productions (and other assets) of documentary filmmaker Marlon T. Riggs.

FILM COLLECTIONS: Anthony Slide has appraised film collections donated to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the American Film Institute, the Lilly Library of Indiana University, the Library of Congress, Pacific Film Archive, the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution, and the UCLA Film and Television Archive. He has valued the largest independent 16mm film library in the world, belonging to director/collector David Bradley, and consisting of more than 5,000 titles; and the film collections of entertainer Mel Torme and producer Jack Haley, Jr. He has also appraised a number of commercial 16mm film libraries, as well as libraries of laser discs and videotapes.

MUSIC: Anthony Slide has appraised the papers of songwriter Sammy Cahn and composer Alex North, the music library of composer William Goldenberg, the original scores of Robert O. Ragland and J.A.C. Redford, and the music archives of Henry Mancini and Billy May, among others.

PAPERS: Among the celebrities whose paper archives Anthony Slide has valued are producer Samuel Z. Arkoff, director/title designer Saul Bass, screenwriter-producer Charles Brackett, producer Allan Carr, special effects legend Linwood Dunn, director Richard Feischer, comedian W.C. Fields, director John Frankenheimer, director Randal Kleiser, director John Landis, critic Leonard Maltin, director Rouben Mamoulian, screenwriter-producer Joseph L. Mankiewicz, actor Steve McQueen, actor Gregory Peck, actress Eva Marie Saint, screenwriter Joseph Stefano, director Edgar G. Ulmer, actor Henry Winkler, and director William Wyler.

RECORDINGS: Original tape-recorded celebrity interviews conducted by authors, in connection with biographical projects, have been valued, along with unique recordings of controversial comedian Lenny Bruce made by his manager Marvin Worth. He has also appraised the more than 500 interviews held by the Screen Actors Guild, including the copyright and intellectual property rights.

SCRAPBOOKS: Among the many scrapbooks valued by Anthony Slide are those for GONE WITH THE WIND and THE WIZARD OF OZ, owned by director Victor Fleming.

SCRIPTS: On behalf of Turner Entertainment Co., Anthony Slide has appraised the M-G-M Feature Film Script Library, donated to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the M-G-M Television Script Library, donated to the University of Southern California. He has appraised the script collections of many individuals, including David Begelman, Marc Daniels, Ranald MacDougal, Eleanor Perry, Martin Rackin, and Billy Wilder, as well as the script archive of YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS producer, Max Liebman.
